OPC Top Pinoy Songs of 2012

This year's OPC10 saw a total of 54 local tracks finding their way into the Pinoy Picks chart. Some stayed long, while others just dropped by. Compared to last year's list where there were several artists with multiple entries, only Christian Bautista has two songs on the Top 20 this year. Five artists return with their respective singles in 2012, while BBS gets the privilege of having one song present in two annual charts. But the big winner this year is Quest. After topping the 3rd Quarter tally, he brings the bacon home as his empowering song "Sige Lang" takes the #1 spot on the 2012 Pinoy year-end chart. Keep it up, Jose!

I Got Ink'd by Skullcandy

Now before you start thinking I got a tattoo, I’m actually talking about the Skullcandy Supreme Sound Ink'd In-Ear Buds that I won during our company Christmas party! So let me first say thank you to the generous mountain guides who gave this away.

The Skullcandy Ink'd is my first in-ear headphones. Having no comparison with other products of its kind, it impressed me with its crisp bass and clear audio quality. It's comfortable enough to wear, its flat wire doesn't really get tangled, and it also provides isolation from outside noise, so you can listen without much distraction.

What it doesn't have though is some inline volume control which would allow volume adjustment without accessing the music player/device itself. Also, be warned that having these plugged into your ears while at work would make it a little difficult for you to hear and communicate with co-workers. But let this not be a bad thing, since in other circumstances, it's perfect to have earphones that could make you tune out from your surroundings.

When Skullcandy labeled these earbuds with the words "supreme sound," they meant it. Priced at below P1,000 (here's its Amazon link), this is a very nice set of earphones to give, receive or buy for yourself.

Basta Pasar Lang

BASTA PASAR LANG
Cebuano parody of One Direction's "Live While We're Young"
Sung by Marlou Morales
New lyrics by JP Cabrales
[Download MP3]

Naa'y examination, examination
That's why I'm studying right now
Pero wa pa'y pang-tuition, wa pa'y pang-tuition
But still I found a way somehow

Yeah, nag-promissory na lang ko
Nga kung mapadad-an ko, I'll quickly pay my due
Yeah, sa dihang ni-take na ko
Nidugo akong ilong, gisunggo

Bea Binene, "Urong Sulong" [OPC10 November 2012]

Kris Allen is the overall king on the latest monthly tally with "Better with You". On the Pinoy chart, it's Julie Anne San Jose who takes the bacon home and that's no surprise as "Enough" swept the November weeklies. What's a pleasant surprise though, is Bea Binene. When I first listened to this track, I was ready to dismiss it as just another cover, but she proved it otherwise. I actually liked her version. She nails it as she does a refreshing take on this Regine Velasquez original. Her voice is also well-suited for the song. From the album Hey, It's Me!, here's "Urong Sulong" which finishes at #4 on the Pinoy Picks chart:

OPC Recommends: Guitar Master

When my guitar's nut got broken, I started looking for a good quality, yet affordable guitar repair service. After reading good reviews about them online, I've decided to bring my guitar to Guitar Master, a guitar shop in Lapu-Lapu City. They also sell great-sounding acoustic guitars, as well as ukeleles, with very friendly prices.

My guitar with its fresh nut.
Thanks, Guitar Master!
Though Guitar Master is a little bit far if you're from Cebu City, it's quite easy to get there. From SM City Cebu, just take a MEZ-bound V-Hire (fare is P25.00). Once it has crossed the old Mactan Bridge and immediately after it has taken a left turn, you may then get off. With signages indicating where it is, you won't miss it. It's at one of the stalls in the newly-constructed commercial building on that corner. (By the way, I'm told this is their new location. Their old location was a little bit farther on the same street.)

Sir Ronnie, the store's owner/manager, is very accommodating. I handed over my guitar to him, and was told to come back the next day to pick it up. While I was there, I also asked about the guitars on sale. Ordinary acoustic guitars are sold for as low as P1,500, while the ones with pick-up are at P1,800 each. Their premium guitars are at P4,000 and up. At the mall, these guitars are priced at around twice as much for the same quality.

When I returned the next day, my guitar has already been fixed as promised. I tried playing it, and it sounded as good as it did before. And the best part: the repair only cost me P200.00! Without hesitation, I definitely recommend Guitar Master for your guitar needs.

Jeepney Tales

Here are two jeepney tales that I have overheard over time. While the first is rather funny, the second is a sad reality of how some need to conceal the truth just to keep a job so they could provide for their family:

Where Are We Going

Two elementary school girls had this conversation on the jeepney:

Girl 1: Asa diay ta monaog? Sa Lahug?
Girl 2: Dili, sa eskuwelahan.
Girl 1: So sa Lahug lagi?
Girl 2: Kay eskuwelahan diay nang Lahug?

They disembarked at Lahug Elementary School.

A Kid's Question

I was on my ride home one Saturday night and there was this mother and daughter on the jeep with me. The mother, still in her youth, late 20's maybe, was wearing a uniform indicating that she is a saleslady of a certain product brand in a department store. Her daughter was around 3-5 years old. I overheard the kid ask: "Ma, di na ko mag-Até nimo kay wala na man ta sa Ayala?"

A Kid's Question was first published in 359 Degrees, my blog at Yahoo! 360° on May 3, 2006.

Britt Nicole, "Stand" [OPC10 October 2012]

I first learned about Britt Nicole in 2007, when I heard her song "You" (click here to watch). Fast forward to this year, and she's back with a new album called Gold. From that album comes this single which tells us that while all other ground is sinking sand, we can stand firm and secure on God's promises. The song peaked at #4 on the weeklies, and for October, it finishes at #10. Here's an acoustic live performance of "Stand", followed by the complete list of the latest monthly tally:

Julie Anne San Jose, "Enough" [OPC10 2012.10.28]

Kapuso singer-actress Julie Anne San Jose charts this week with not one, but two new entries! The first song, "I'll Be There", is a #1 hit which this blog failed to give attention to on the height of its popularity (I know, my bad). It debuts at #7 on the Pinoy Picks.

The second one is the follow-up single, currently hot and on the rise (as of this writing, it has already reached #1 on the MYX Daily Top 10). It gives off a Beyoncé – "Halo" and a Jojo – "Leave (Get Out)" vibe, and that means it's a good quality pop track. "Enough" debuts at #1 on the Pinoy chart, and #6 overall.

Both are lifted from her self-titled debut album, which is available for digital purchase on iTunes.  Below is the official music video of "Enough", followed by the complete OPC charts for this week:

Popping Out: David Archuleta, "Everybody Hurts"

Some songs never make it to the OPC10. They just sit solidly outside the Top 10 until they decline and fade away. But nonetheless, these entries also deserve some attention. For this reason, starting with the next OPC10, I'll also be including the Popouts chart, a short list which will feature the Top 3 tracks that have not yet entered the Overall Picks. The concept will be similar to Billboard's Bubbling Under chart.

In anticipation of its debut on Sunday, here's an extended Top 10 list of the songs currently popping outside the Top 10. Priyanka Chopra is at #1 with "In My City" featuring will.i.am, while our featured video, "Everybody Hurts" by David Archuleta, is at #6:

OPC10 Popouts Chart
Special Pre-Debut Edition
  1. Priyanka Chopra - In My City (feat. will.i.am)
  2. Remedy Drive - Better Than Life
  3. Melanie Amaro - Don't Fail Me Now
  4. Alicia Keys - Girl on Fire (Bluelight Remix)
  5. Brandy - Wildest Dreams
  6. David Archuleta - Everybody Hurts
  7. Q-York - Dito Na (feat. AMP, Nimbus 9, Pikaso & Knowa Lazarus)
  8. Ciara - Sorry
  9. Anberlin - Someone Anyone
  10. Hedley - Kiss You Inside Out
Will Priyanka and will.i.am's collaboration stay on top come Sunday? Will it slide down or will it be elevated to the main chart? Well, know the answers to all those questions on the next edition of the OPC10!

Chop-a-Tune: Payphone

When I was still on the radio, one of the segments on my radio program was Chop-a-Tune. In this segment, I take on a popular tune, chop it line-by-line, and offer my own interpretation of the given line. Today, I'm reintroducing Chop-a-Tune, this time on this blog. And for the pilot edition, I'm giving you my take on the song "Payphone". Listen to the audio clip below as I and Godsend Debbie dissect this hit from Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa:

Syncing Playlists on the Sony Walkman NWZ-B172F

In my previous post about the Sony Walkman NWZ-B172F, I mentioned that when the device is connected to the computer, it is not just detected as an ordinary flash drive, but it is recognized as a portable music player. That means it supports the Media Transfer Protocol or MTP, and one of its benefits is being able to control and manage your music easily through playlists. There are many ways to sync your playlists, but on this blog entry, I'll show you how to do it using Windows Media Player.

If you missed the first one, you may check it out here (it includes the new "Payphone" by Maroon 5 and some other songs of not-so-distant past). This second batch features MercyMe's "The Generous Mr. Lovewell" which I tabbed just recently on my Nokia X1-01's composer, and other ringtones that have been published before on my defunct Talkthrough blog. Woku: The Sony Walkman NWZ-B172F

It’s been awhile since I’ve had a dedicated music player. Since my GoGear broke, I have been using my Nokia X1-01 to listen to songs on the radio or in my library. Though it does give me my fill of sound, it proves lacking in features that I think are essential to enjoy music the way I want to. It can’t even shuffle songs correctly and chances are, one or two songs get to be played twice in a span of an hour (and to think it had more than 120 songs to choose from).

Well, big thanks to my Godsend Debbie, I now have a Sony Walkman NWZ-B172F, which I just officially named Woku. It’s a 2GB portable music player that meets my needs and even more. Here are some of its remarkable features that got me raising my two thumbs up:

The Jobseeker and the Coffee

A jobseeker applied for work at Company A and Company B. He passed the interviews of both companies, and soon, he was given their respective job offers. The offers were almost identical – salary, perks and privileges. But in one minor difference, Company A revealed that a small benefit that their employees can avail of is the discounted price of drinks from their vending machine – coffee costs only P1 per cup. Company B, on the other hand, allowed their employees to have unlimited drinks from their vending machine, for free!

Being the coffee lover that he is, not to mention he also loves everything that's free, he decided to take the job at Company B. On his first day, he learned some good news and bad news. The good news: The unlimited coffee is true. The bad news: On the vending machine, is a glaring notice, mentioning the bad effects of having too much coffee. As he also cared for his health, he made an effort to only consume two to three cups per day, which was still within the normal intake. It was far less than the unlimited cups he imagined, but at least he is able to save P2.00 to P3.00 daily.

Mabawi pa kaha ko to

Wala na koy pangtawag o pang-text
Hurot pug kawala akong pics
Bag-ong phone wa koy ikapalit
Di na ko ma-contact, kapait

Neverending Weekend, "Say It All Now" [OPC10 8.5.12]

I actually discovered a lot of new songs this week, but only six are able to make it to the Top 10 lists. Overall, Cody Simpson, Karmin and Example debut with their respective tracks from #6 to #8, while on the OPM tally, Krissy & Ericka and Tweens of Pop debut at #2 and #3.

The 8th Pinoy pick is our 6th new entry, from a band called Neverending Weekend. This song is not really new (it was released in December 2010 and went to #1 on Killer Bee Cebu's Indie Weekly Top 20 for five straight weeks), but it's just now that I stumbled upon it. Watch "Say It All Now" and check out the latest charts below, then visit the Facebook page of this Cebuano talent for more weekends that (you wish) would never end.

Monophonic Ringtones: "Payphone" and More

Way back the days of the Nokia 3210 and 3310, creating monophonic ringtones via the phone's Composer function was quite popular. If a ringtone to a tune I liked was not available, I tabbed them on my own. Fast forward to today, and that feature is back on my Nokia X1-01. I then tabbed "Payphone" and made it my ringtone. Here is the said ringtone plus some older monotones I was able to tab before, and as published on my now defunct Talkthrough blog:

Owl City & CR Jepsen, "Good Time" [OPC10 July 2012]

Kerrie Roberts is the overall leader for this monthly edition of the OPC10! After being #1 for two weeks  in July (three weeks including June), "Finally Home" scores a home run and bags the top spot. And on the Pinoy tally, it's Quest taking first honors as his song "Sige Lang" grabbed a week on top of the overall chart and is continuing to reign locally (now on its third week).

Meanwhile, Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen faced tough competition on the weeklies, preventing their collaboration from securing the #1 spot. However, they still manage to have a very "Good Time" to finish at second place. Here's the official music video of their smash hit, followed by our Top 10 lists:

Pebble Bytes

12:51. I’m speculating that Krissy’s watch was broken when she wrote this song. She and Ericka sing "it's twelve fifty-one" on the first chorus, but if it was exactly 12:51:00 at that time, it would already be 12:52:12 on the second chorus, but they still say "twelve fifty-one"!

One Tab. If a trusted brand calls their tablet One Tab, I'd probably buy it. It would feel like they named it after my Cebuano moniker, Juan Tabian. On second thought, since they named their device after me, maybe they should give me one for free!

Basketball. I used to play basketball when I was in elementary. I wasn’t the best but I say I was competitive enough. But then, I stopped when I was in high school. It was during this time that my playmates started to grow tall... and I did not.

Matchbox Twenty, "She's So Mean" [OPC10 2012.7.29]

This week on the OPC10: The Pinoy chart is virtually unchanged, but the Overall chart gets plenty of movement. Again. MercyMe shoots up from #6 to #2 with "The Hurt and the Healer," while Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen bounce back to #4 with "Good Time." Debuting this week are: Dara Maclean's "Yours Forever" (#3), Sean Paul's "How Deep Is Your Love" featuring Kelly Rowland (#7), and our featured entry at #6.

Matchbox Twenty has added up another hit on their discography. A few of my favorites from this band are "Unwell," "Mad Season," "If You're Gone," "Disease," and "Bent." Here's Rob Thomas and the rest of the band with the first single off their upcoming album North, "She's So Mean."

I'm a Dirham, Not a Peso!

Seems like I’ve become a magnet of foreign coins lately. Last week, I posted about the 100 won (South Korean coin) that was in my possession, and now, I have this 50 dirham coin, a denomination in the State of Qatar. And I got it in exactly the same way as the previous one.

The driver gave me my change, I counted it and the amount was correct. But I didn’t really examine each coin that I got. I just assumed the Qatari coin was just another piso since they are about the same size. I was gonna use it as fare for my next jeepney ride when I noticed.

So I kept it, checked and found out that it’s actually equivalent to P5.75! I thought I had a peso, but it turns out it’s worth more. Again. Well, I’m not complaining!

The dirham is a subunit of the riyal, the currency of Qatar. 100 dirham is equal to one riyal, much like 100 centavos is equal to one peso.

Plumb, "Need You Now" [OPC10 2012.7.22]

I Won! I Won! 100 Won!

This South Korean coin recently found its way into my coin purse. Some driver or konduktor most likely gave it to me as change, mistaking it for a P1 coin. Well, 100 won is equivalent to P3.65, so that means I got more than thrice the worth of the peso it's supposed to be! Hehe.

My Fave Family Computer Sports Games

When I was a kid, the Nintendo Family Computer was the popular video game console. I spent hours and hours playing, and it certainly was one of the ways I enjoyed my childhood. Here were (and still are) my favorite sports games on this cartridge-based game system:

Double Dribble

I’ve been a basketball fan since I was a little child, so naturally, this became one of my must-play games. I continuously practiced until I’ve mastered shooting on the sure-shot spots, applying very good defense and winning every match against the Level III computer opponent. The only thing I wasn’t able to be very good at is my free-throw shooting.
