OPC Pop 40 of 2017

We have our second year-end chart on this blog and it's the OPC Pop 40 of 2017. These are the Top 40 pop hits of the year based on the weekly tallies, personal favorites, and Spotify rankings ("Your Top Songs 2017").

This year, we have a returnee at #1! Wisconsin-based band We Are Leo topped our 2012 year-end chart with "Supernova Sunrise." Five years later, the sun has set but the moon rises, and they walk on it on their way to becoming our annual kings again with their new track called "Astronaut"! Talk about celestial-themed songs, huh? The song from their third album The Rush and The Roar which stayed at #1 for six weeks, closely edging out Grayson Reed's "Fight for You" and the #1 OPM track "Isang Daang Habangbuhay" by Yassi Pressman.

The chart also features some tracks that you might not find in other year-enders: My favorite rock band Skillet with the loud track "I Want to Live" at #7, Fifth Harmony's "Can You See" (from the original soundtrack of The Star) at #10, Jamie Grace's "The Happy Song" at #11, Owl City's "All My Friends" at #15, and the Blessid Union of Souls' "Get Along" at #22 among others. Now is the perfect time to discover these tracks by checking them out on the Spotify playlist embedded below.

We Are Leo, "Oxygen" [OPC10 2013.3.10]

It's a week of new entries on this week's OPC10: six on the Overall chart, two on the Pinoy chart, plus a totally fresh set of Popout Tracks. Leading the pack are the Blessid Union of Souls, this blogger's all-time favorite band. Just last week, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they just followed me back on Twitter! Their song "Die for You" is a previously unreleased track that was sent to the members of band's official fan group for free! I can't feature it yet (there is still no official authorized upload of the song) so if you want to hear it, then I invite you to join The Union so you'd also get a copy.

Also making a grand homecoming entrance this week is We Are Leo! Last year, they were #1 on this blog's yearend chart with "Supernova Sunrise", and now they are back with yet another single from their Hello EP. "Oxygen" is a song that encourages us to never give up and hold on tight even when you already find it hard to breathe. And while you can associate the oxygen to anything that brings life and hope to you, the song is really about Jesus who indeed is the life-giver and life-saver. The song debuts at #2 this week, and here is its official music video:

OPC Top 40 Songs of 2012

Happy new year, everyone! Before we go full-speed for 2013, let's first look back and recap the previous year in music with OPC's Top 40 Songs of 2012. Six Pinoy tracks make it to the overall list, eight artists return from the 2011 year-end chart, while one entry is a non-mover! The Top 3 maybe a unique selection, but these are the songs which had the most impact and significance on this side of the web. US pop/rock quintet We Are Leo ranked 7th in 2011, but this time, they improve and advance all the way to #1 with "Supernova Sunrise." Way to go, guys! And if you do happen to read this, does Andrew have Filipino blood? Hehe.
