16 Tips to Make You a Better Jeepney Passenger

There are the most essential tips in riding a jeepney, like "Ayaw kalimti ang plete" and "Sinsilyo lang sa buntag," but there are also some other things that must be observed by jeepney commuters so they would become better co-passengers. When you follow these, you would become less of a jerk and you'd be more awesome and cool. Here are sixteen reminders that you should keep in mind while riding a jeepney:

  1. Men, your balls aren't that big.
Ayaw palabi og bilangkad kung puno na. Your balls won't be crushed if you close your legs a little bit more.

  2. Ayaw pagtakilid kung puno na.
    Give space and be considerate.

  3. Let go of the hand bar when somebody's getting on board, labi na kung mag-aginod na ang jeep.
The passenger who is not seated yet needs the hand bar more than you do. This is also applicable when someone is disembarking.

Conceal as much as possible ug ayaw ipahungaw. It's not something to be proud of. Better tip: Use deodorant para dili bahô imong ilok.

  5. Don't say "Kung ganahan mo komportable, pag-taxi" kung pasibugon.
Yup, because what you just said applies to you too.

  6. Kung walay konduktor, ayaw itunol ang plete sa driver if he is maneuvering a turn.
It can wait after the turn is done. Safety first gyud dapat.

  7. Isbogi pasulod if naay elderly or parent with child nga mosakay.
Ma-appreciate nila nga they don't have to go any further inside the jeep, plus mas dali pa gyud makalarga kay nakalingkod na man sila. Mas dali ka maabot sa imong adtuan.

  8. Ang No Smoking rule, applicable sa tibuok jeep.

  10. Wait for your fare to reach the driver or konduktor before stating asa gikan, asa naog ug pila ka buok.
Kusga pud imong tingog. This is to avoid repetition, either ikaw mo-repeat or kadtong duol sa driver.

Especially if you're in between the paying passenger and the fare-taker (be it the driver or konduktor), stop talking loudly with whoever nga kuyog nimo so both of them can hear each other. Moreover, don't talk very loudly at all like you own the ride. You can spare your co-passengers from knowing that you're a gossiper.

  13. Sa pagtunol sa plete, don't drop it like it's hot.
A little contact with a stranger won't hurt, sanitary or otherwise. Wa man siguro skin disease imong co-passenger (if naa, basin natakdan na ka even without hand contact kay airborne man). Also assume nga dili siya maniac unless naa kay proof.

  14. Naay sakto nga higayon kung kanus-a ka magpatunol og plete.
Ang nag-inusara nga pasahero nga imong pamalihugan kay busy pa sa pag-abli sa iyang bag o wallet to get his/her fare. This is not the right time nga mamalihug ka. Wait until he or she is done; it won't take forever.

  16. Ang pagpatunol sa plete is a request. Say "palihug" and "salamat".
Although one should be prepared to pass the plete while riding a jeep, if your co-passengers can't or won't, you cannot force them. Naay uban arte o tapulan lang gyud motunol, pero there are valid reasons: like wala ka sa timing (see tips 14 and 15), or daghan sila'g gibitbit, puno ilang kamot, nag-concentrate sila sa dalan kay basin malapas sila, gisapot, etc.

To sum it all up, what would really make you a nice and pleasant co-passenger is your courtesy and appropriate conduct when on a jeepney, or any public ride for that matter. Be mindful of others, and be considerate to them, and if you can do those cheerfully, that's even a plus. What about you, do you have other tips or reminders not included in this list? Share them!
